The original SONS OF THUNDER were two characters whose memory was recorded in ancient texts around two thousand years ago. Their names are translated into english as James and John. They were disciples of YAHU’SHUA HA MASHIACH (a.k.a. ‘Jesus The Messiah’).
The ‘SONS OF THUNDER’ were men of fiery temper. They were men that despised injustice. They were men that were prepared to stand up for what is right.
52and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements for Him.
53But they did not receive Him, because He was traveling toward Jerusalem.
54When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” (Luke 9:52-54)
Needless to say… YAHU’SHUA explained to them that He didn’t want them going around destroying entire villages by calling down fire from heaven… And He surnamed them Boanerges (Mark 3:17), which the bible translates as ‘SONS OF THUNDER’ (a more literal translation however would be ’Sons Of Rage’).
Funnily enough… the ‘SONS OF THUNDER’ were two of YAHU’SHUA’s favourite disciples. Them and Peter. The only three disciples that it is recorded that He ever nick-named. Apparently, these three were His favourites. They were the only three disciples that YAHU’SHUA took with Him to pray on the Mount at the Transfiguration (Mt 17:1 Mk 9:2 Lk 9:28). They were the only three disciples that He took with Him to the Garden of Gethsemane just before He was arrested (Mt 26:37 Mk 14:33). And they were the only three that He let follow Him when He went in to heal Jairus’ daughter (Mk 5:37 Lk 8:51).
They were devout followers of The Way of YAHU’SHUA HA MASHIACH. They were men of upright character and principles. They were the ‘SONS OF THUNDER’.
The spirit of the SONS OF THUNDER is still alive today… And you can hear and feel our ROAR at injustice as we pass you on the road…
Just as the original ‘SONS OF THUNDER’ were disciples of YAHU’SHUA HA MASHIACH, so too are we, the modern day ‘SONS OF THUNDER’.
